Maitri Midwifery
Traditional Midwifery Care

My name is Sara Rathbone and I am a certified professional midwife.

I was inspired to become a midwife in 1995 during the pregnancy of my son Isaiah. It wasn't until his birth on May 29,1996 that I was certain that I wanted to be a midwife.  I studied under several traditional midwives in Eugene Oregon from 1997 to 2000. We discussed the politics of midwifery, as well as the fundamentals of midwifery care from a homebirth perspective. I attended a handful of planned homebirths with several different midwives, as well as, gave birth to my daughter Asher.

In 2000, I moved to Asheville to attend The Matrona's Holistic Midwifery program with Whapio. This program provided a more thorough academic approach to midwifery and an introduction to several different healing arts such as homeopathy, Chinese medicine and massage. What I gained most from this program was the ability to understand and communicate with people of all different philosophies. I find this skill to be the most valuable, not only with the variety of families I have served but especially within the midwifery community.

During the completion of this program, I began an apprenticeship with Jennifer Williams, a Certified Professional Midwife, in Bloomington, Indiana. Jennifer is a phenomenal midwife with years of experience. She is an asset to the families she serves and the apprentices she trains.  We worked with the Old Order Amish, in addition to a variety of families in southern Indiana. I gained the confidence and experience that I needed to begin my own practice.

I have been attending births in the Asheville area since 2003. I obtained my CPM credential in 2008 through the North American Registry of Midwives. In order to complete the clinical requirements I completed an internship at Casa de Nacimiento in El Paso,TX during the summer of 2006.

I believe that pregnancy and birth are a normal physiological process. It is a meaningful and transformational time during a family's life. With support, encouragement and a positive approach, this time can be an extremely rewarding and fulfilling experience. Home is an ideal environment to give birth.

Care Provided

I provide prenantal care that consists of caring for Mom and baby from a holistic perspective. We discuss the physical components of pregnancy as well as the emotional.

I attend the birth with compassionate and competent care, enabling a safe and supportive environment while catering to family-centered birth.

With postpartum care I address the health of the newborn and healing aspects for the mother.

All appointments are within the family's home. I believe this is an important aspect of caring for families as it allows for a more intimate connection.
